Community Service Award Honorees
Mr. Frank R. Hatten
2023 Service Award in Community Outreach
Hailing from Tuskegee, Alabama, Frank R. Hatten, relocated to the Charleston Area after accepting a position with Boeing. He holds two Bachelor’s Degrees from the former Tuskegee Institute (now University) and the University of North Carolina – Charlotte and is member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Married to Yolanda Caldwell Hatten for 34 years, they have two sons, Frank (30) and Daniel (25). For the past 15 years he has worked as a Project Manager and Education Relations Specialist for Boeing SC; where his lifelong interests of volunteering, mentoring and community outreach are refueled through Boeing’s K-12 initiatives for South Carolina. On a weekly basis you can find Frank working alongside educators and students in school; afterschool programs and community initiatives. Through the Boeing Dream Learners Program, he reaches hundreds annually and has impacted the lives of thousands of students over the years through S.T.E.M. programming, advanced manufacturing, aerospace, Robotics, and through Team Building. Thanks for showing our youth, our future, that the “Sky is the Limit”.
Anthony “Tony” Joyner
2023 Service Award in Economic Empowerment
Brother Anthony “Tony” Joyner, also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and an active member of the Beta Kappa Lambda Chapter. He holds a B.A. degree in History from Fisk University, is a former Marine, and is married to Krystle Stephen-Joyner. Mr. Joyner a native of Charleston, SC is the Executive Director of Housing Development for Metanoia, a nonprofit organization located in North Charleston. Through Metanoia, he works to make a positive change in the lives of others and society as a whole, by investing in neighborhood assets to build leaders, establish quality housing and generate economic development. Through his efforts, he has successfully helped and led financial literacy seminars, homebuyers’ education workshops and additionally aided homeowners in getting repairs done to increase their home’s value. Thank you for creating opportunities for local residents to build and sustain income while creating a healthy neighborhood economy.
Deronda C. Washington
2023 Service Award in Higher Educational Leadership
Mrs. Deronda C. Washington currently serves as Interim Executive Director for Student Involvement at the College of Charleston, where she has the responsibility for Student Life, Student Leadership, and Fraternity and Sorority Life. She holds a Bachelor’s from Winthrop
University and is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Talented, articulate, and effervescent; she readily works to develop students in the areas of Integrity, Accountability, Responsibility, Communication and Respect for Individual Differences. Mrs. Washington is beloved by students and faculty alike, as she daily inspires individuals and student organizations to go beyond normal expectations to accomplish goals, institute change or to make a difference their community. She is married to Bro. Rev. Jarrett B. Washington and faithfully serves their congregation at Hopewell AME Church, Hemingway, SC as First Lady. In her spare time, you can find Deronda volunteering, actively engaging with her sorority’s local chapter Gamma Xi Omega and being a dance mom with her daughter Braylen Jael’s dance team. Thank you for your efforts in inspiring students to lead and become well-rounded community participants.
Mr. Anjene “A.J.” Davis
2023 Service Award in Civic Engagement and Political Activism.
Mr. AJ Davis a consultant and grassroots community organizer. Father to one son, he consistently advocates for children and citizens based on improved quality of life; including increased educational opportunities, affordable housing, efforts to help increase the livable wage and various other equity concerns. One who isn’t affraid to call leaders to task in addressing these issues; he also strongly champions citizens to be informed about civics and their political rights. Currently employed by Charleston County School District, Mr. Davis is also the co-founder of Community Solutions Consulting, Inc., where he works to help municipalities, organizations and companies develop community relations strategies. A member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., he has served his community through numerous local organizations and leadership on several boards. AJ believes research-based and data-driven approaches to community engagement, will create environments or communities where knowledge and understanding are exchanged, and goals and objectives are reached. Mr. Davis is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Thanks for advocating on the behalf of all citizens and working to increase our overall quality of life.
